Sing St John welcomes you to our Senior Singalong, Episode 22.
My name is Winnie and I'm here today with Michael.
Lucia.
Gwen.
And Bodicea.
Today we are going to sing, Till the Storm Passes By.
The hymn, Till the Storm Passes By, was written by Mosie Lister.
It was originally intended for Mahalia Jackson, but it never reached her.
Mosie Lister wanted to write a song that would be a prayer for a person who has undergone struggles in life.
Lister may have also been inspired by the story of Jesus, who was with his disciples in a boat when a vicious storm hit them.
And he arose and rebuked the wind and said unto the sea, Peace!
Be still!
And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.
It’s always important to give your body a little preparation before singing, so lets do a little warm up.
Let's start with posture.
Our backs are tall and ready for action.
If you're sitting, sit as tall as you can and place both feet flat on the floor.
Make sure your shoulders are relaxed and sitting right on top of that spine.
To do that let’s inhale and raise our shoulders.
(inhale) And drop them.
Okay.
One last singing exercise for today.
(piano) Okay, let's try that together.
(piano) Shoulders relaxed.
Spine erect.
Breathe.
Smile.
One more.
Great job.
Thank you everyone.
We are going to start learning this song from the bottom up.
That means basses, you’re up first.
Michael will teach us the verse first.
He will sing.
You will repeat.
Nice job.
Now on to the chorus.
Now basses, let's sing the first verse and the chorus through together, along with the accompaniment so that you can get your bearings.
(piano introduction) That's like a lullaby.
Thank you, Michael.
It's time for tenors.
That's you and me.
And we'll get started learning our part.
Ready Okay.
Now it's time for the chorus.
Now we’ll sing the verse and the chorus with the accompaniment.
(piano introduction) Thank you, Tenors.
You're all set.
Gwen and Lucia, It's your turn to lead the alto section.
You've got it.
We're going to introduce the chorus now.
We'll sing.
You repeat.
Very good altos.
Now we're ready to sing with the accompaniment, to see how we fit in with everyone else.
(piano introduction) Yay!
Yes.
(laughter) (exhales) Bodicea is going to teach the melodies to the soprano next Good job.
Now just the chorus.
Let's sing the soprano part through with the accompaniment.
(piano introduction) That's such a sweet song, isn't it?
It sure is.
(laughter) Let's call everyone together now and sing the entire song in four part harmony.
(piano introduction) Yay!
Yes!
Finished!
(clapping) We did it!
Thank you for joining our Senior Singalong.
One day perhaps we'll sing together on a flight to Morocco or on a cruise ship under a flamboyant tree or at our church walk or in the church choir.
But until then, keep singing!
(piano introduction) Good night to you all and sweet be thy sleep May angels around you their silent watch keep Good night, good night, good night, good night Good night to you all and sweet be thy sleep May angels around you their silent watch keep Good night, good night, good night, good night Good night to you all and sweet be thy sleep May angels around you their silent watch keep Good night, good night, good night, good night Good night to you all and sweet be thy sleep May angels around you their silent watch keep Good night, good night, good night, good night May angels around you their silent watch keep Good night, good night, good night, good night.
Good night everyone!
We all remember the chorus melody for this, but we should probably revisit that first with Bodicea.
